The pump unit is the heart of an inflatable hot tub. It heats, filters, runs the bubbles and often inflates the wall too. When it fails out of warranty, a replacement pump can bring a sound tub back to life for far less than a new one. Getting the right part is the hard bit, as pumps differ between models and years. This guide explains when to replace rather than repair, how to match a pump to your tub and how to fit it safely.

Repair, replace or new tub?

Before buying a pump, rule out simpler faults. A dirty filter, low water, a tripped RCD or a blocked air intake can all look like a failed pump. Work through Lay-Z-Spa pump not working, heater not working and error codes first.

If the tub is under warranty, contact the maker before doing anything. Opening the pump unit or fitting third party parts may void the warranty. Out of warranty, weigh the cost of a pump against the age and state of the liner and cover; an old, patched tub may be better replaced.

How to match a replacement pump

Lay-Z-Spa pumps are not all interchangeable. Some cover several models of the same generation, but older and newer tubs often use different connectors. If in doubt, ask Bestway or the seller with both model numbers.

  • Find the tub's model number on the liner label or in the manual.
  • Find the pump unit's model number on its label.
  • Check the maker's list of compatible tubs for the replacement pump.
  • Match the connection type: hose connectors differ between brands and generations.
  • Match features: AirJet, AirJet Plus, HydroJet and WiFi pumps are different.
  • Check it is a UK 220 to 240 V unit with a UK plug and RCD.

Fitting a new pump unit

  1. 1

Switch off and unplug the old pump unit.

  2. 2

Close the valves or fit the plugs on the inlet and outlet if your tub has them, or drain the water below the connections.

  3. 3

Disconnect the hoses or connectors from the tub and the old pump.

  4. 4

Position the new pump on a firm, level, dry surface beside the tub.

  5. 5

Connect it as the manual shows, making sure seals are seated.

  6. 6

Open valves, top up water if needed and check for leaks before switching on.

  7. 7

Plug in, test the RCD and run the filter, then the heater and bubbles.

Note:Never open the pump unit's casing or alter its electrics. Plug only into a suitable outdoor socket with RCD protection, and ask a qualified electrician about any wiring work.

Parts that can be replaced on their own

Some parts are sold separately: filter housings, connectors, seals, valves, covers for the control panel and, for some models, impellers. Bestway and other makers sell many of these, and replacing a cracked connector or seal can stop a leak without changing the whole unit.

Heater elements and control boards sit inside the sealed unit. Those are usually repaired by the maker's service network or replaced as a complete pump unit.

Keeping the new pump healthy

  • Rinse filters every few days so flow stays strong.
  • Keep the pump on a raised, level surface so it never sits in water.
  • Keep its air vents clear.
  • Treat hard water to cut scale on the heater; see hard water and limescale.
  • Drain, dry and store it indoors when packing the tub away; see how to store an inflatable hot tub.

If you decide on a new tub

If the cost of a pump is close to a new tub, it can make sense to start again with a newer model and warranty. Our Lay-Z-Spa models compared and best inflatable hot tubs guides cover current options.

Frequently asked questions

Are Lay-Z-Spa pumps interchangeable? Some fit several models of the same generation, but not all. Match the pump to your tub's model and connector type, and check with Bestway if unsure.

Can I fit a different brand's pump to my tub? Usually not, as connectors and controls differ. Use the maker's pump or one listed as compatible.

Can the heater be replaced on its own? Usually not by the owner. The heater sits inside the sealed pump unit, so it is repaired by the maker or replaced as a whole unit.

Do I need to drain the tub to change the pump? Close the valves or plugs if your tub has them; otherwise drain below the connections first.
