Owners often worry when it rains on the pump unit, or ask whether they can leave a Lay-Z-Spa pump out all year. Pump units are made for outdoor use, but there is a difference between rain resistant and waterproof. This guide explains what the pump and RCD plug are built to cope with, how to keep them dry and safe, and the warning signs that mean you should stop and get help.

What the pump unit is built for

The pump unit houses the heater, filter pump, air blower and controls. Makers design it to stand next to the tub outdoors and take rain, splashes and condensation. Many units carry an IP rating on the label or in the manual, which describes how well the casing resists dust and water.

No inflatable tub pump is designed to be submerged. Standing in water, being hit by a jet from a hose or having water poured over the controls can let water in.

The RCD plug

Most inflatable tubs come with an RCD built into the plug or the cable. It cuts the power if it detects current leaking to earth, which protects you in many faults. The RCD housing is usually splash resistant rather than waterproof, so it should be kept off the ground, out of puddles and away from the tub's splash zone.

Test the RCD before each use or as often as the manual says, using its test button. If it does not trip when tested, do not use the tub.

Note:Hot tubs combine water and mains electricity. Use a weatherproof outdoor socket protected by an RCD, follow the maker's manual, and have any new circuit or socket fitted by a qualified electrician.

Keeping the pump and plug dry

  • Stand the pump unit on a firm, level, raised surface, such as a paving slab, so water drains away.
  • Never let it sit in a puddle or on soft ground that floods.
  • Keep the RCD plug and socket off the ground, ideally in a weatherproof outdoor socket with the cover closed.
  • Route the cable so water runs away from the plug, not along it.
  • Use only covers made for the pump by the maker; keep vents clear.
  • Do not hose down the pump unit when cleaning.

Leaving it out all year

Some owners keep inflatable tubs running through the year. If you do, follow the maker's winter guidance, including frost protection and minimum temperatures. Ice inside the pump or connections can crack parts. See using an inflatable hot tub in winter.

If you pack the tub away, drain the pump unit as the manual shows, dry it and store it indoors, away from frost. See how to store an inflatable hot tub.

Warning signs to act on

For repeated tripping, read hot tub keeps tripping the RCD. If the pump needs replacing, see inflatable hot tub pump replacement.

Choosing a tub with outdoor use in mind

Some newer tubs have integrated heaters and controls built into the tub wall or frame, rather than a separate unit beside it. Wave's Pacific models in our guides list an integrated heater. That can tidy the layout, but the same rules on sockets, RCDs and drainage apply. Compare models in our Wave Spa range and winter tub guides.

After heavy rain or a storm

Walk round the tub once the rain stops. Check that the pump unit is not standing in water, the cable has not been pulled and the socket cover is closed. If water has pooled around the pump, switch off at the socket before moving anything, then improve the drainage under it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Lay-Z-Spa pump waterproof? It is designed for outdoor use and rain, but not to be submerged or stand in water. Keep it raised and drained.

Can I leave the Lay-Z-Spa pump out in the rain? Yes, it is built for outdoor use. Keep it off wet ground and keep the RCD plug dry.

Is the RCD plug waterproof? Usually splash resistant, not waterproof. Keep it off the ground in a weatherproof socket.

Can I put a cover over the pump? Only a cover the maker approves. The unit needs airflow to work safely.
